A couple of days of wandering, with both summer-like hope, and grayer, perhaps more usual skies. We certainly did not find the time to go everywhere we wanted to, but finally took to riding trams all over when our legs finally gave out. In the older central neighborhoods, every step seems to bring one face to face with something worth looking at. The canals were rife with weekend revelers, both on boats, in the sidewalk cafes, and quiet bench-sitting observers.
The city fairly sparkles with character. Between the gorgeous gabled houses, the sunlight falling on the canals, the bridges, the streams of bicycles, and the energy of both locals and tourists, there is little question that it is a unique combination of elements that make for the experience Amsterdam. We’re already looking forward to future visits to peek behind still more corners and look up at yet undiscovered gables. Some highlights below.
